What To Expect: Newborn Photoshoot

Congratulations on your new arrival!

Thank you for considering me to capture this very special and intimate time with your family.

I’d like to tell you a little about my style and packages, so as you can see if they are the right fit for you and your new family.

There are many different styles within newborn photography, and it’s just a matter of what you like and finding a photographer that matches that. Whilst I appreciate the creativity that traditional posed babies with lots of props require, my own signature style comes from a love of the raw simplicity that goes with baby-led posing, which I feel focuses on and captures, the very essence of being a baby.

Baby-led Posing

Baby-led posing is basically creating a natural environment for your baby, and for them to be comfortable in various wraps, blankets and positions that are natural to them. These images capture how your newborn usually sleeps – beautifully natural, simple, and with lots of bare skin! Clients often tell me they love how natural my poses feel and come across in the photos. I want you to look back on your photos and be reminded of these precious early moments; how they used to sleep on their back with hands up by their ears, or their squashy button nose, or how tiny their toes were.

As a lifestyle photographer, my job is all about capturing this special moment in time with your new baby. It is up to you whether you want the session to focus solely on your newborn, or a mix of family and newborn shots. I recommend that you have at least a couple of images of you / you and your family with your baby – I promise you will thank me in future years!

Timing & Packages

The best time to do a newborn shoot is ideally within the first 2 weeks. This is when they are at their most sleepy and most cooperative – especially after a good feed! But don’t worry if this isn’t possible – I’ve done sessions where the babies are older, with some beautiful moments captured to treasure forever.

I have different packages for newborns, including a Maternity & Newborn Combo, Newborn, and Newborn Delux (which is shoot half in the hospital and half at home). You can find out more details under PACKAGES.

How My Shoots Work

I’m a location photographer, so I would come to you, at a time that is best for you and your baby. All I need is somewhere with a good light source – like a window. I have a couple of props (snuggly, textured blankets, swaddling wraps and a couple of hats and bows), but my work is very uncluttered. Feel free to include something of your own that makes it unique to you – a teddy bear from aunty, or their favourite blanket.

Before I arrive, it’s best if you can feed your baby so that they are full and (hopefully!) sleepy. It’s also a good idea to turn off the AC in the room we’ll be using, as this will help them settle and allow us to get some skin shots. I also have some white noise apps that can help soothe, but often find laying my hand on your baby whilst making ‘ssshhhhhing’ noises works well too!

Newborn sessions are usually longer than family sessions (typically aroud hours). This allows us time for feeding and soothing breaks. I don’t want you to be stressed about time so I don’t clock-watch – we take as long as we need to make sure we are both happy we have all the images we want.

And please don’t worry if your baby has milk spots or flaky skin … the magic of editing can get rid of this :)

More details on how you get your images can be found HERE. If you have any questions or would like to know more please don’t hesitate to get in TOUCH. I would love to hear from you.

Love, Emma X
