What To Expect: Cakesmash Photoshoot

Cakesmashes are such a fun way to celebrate your baby turning one, and are becoming more and more popular, here in the UAE. It is a great opportunity to create and capture memories. Essentially your baby is sat down in front of a cake and encouraged to explore it and taste it ... and get covered in bits of sticky icing! It really does make for the cutest and funniest photos.

Cakesmashes can be very simple with just your baby and a cake, or something more elaborate with background decorations like balloons, bunting and props. It really depends on what you want.

As a location photographer – I come to you. I don’t have a studio, so I would come to your home or to your destination of choice. Your local park, beach or desert make wonderful backdrops for a cakesmash that’s a bit different.

It will be up to you to provide the cake and decorations (bunting, balloons, etc.). I have some letters spelling ONE, a cakestand, and a backdrop stand and paper that I am happy to bring if you would like to use in the photoshoot.

Handy Tips

As the cake is going to get ‘smashed’ there’s no need to spend a lot of money on it. Homemade or a basic shop bought one is fine. You can always jazz it up with more decorations or sprinkles. Piping some icing swirls brings an elegance and textural element to it.

The icing should be something soft. If it is too hard or has a thick crust, it will be difficult to smash and pull apart.

It is better to choose a colour of cake and icing that isn’t brown or red, if possible. As it can look like your baby is eating something else! A vanilla cake with icing and sprinkles to match the colour scheme of your decorations is ideal. (Blue icing can stain and be difficult to get out of carpets and furniture so I’ll need your help to make sure your baby doesn’t crawl off!)

Not all babies will get stuck into the cakesmash spirit. For some it’s their first introduction to sugar and some don’t like to get too sticky. They can find it a little overwhelming!

Don’t worry, there are ways we can fake it to get those glorious messy baby photos. Siblings are a great way to encourage your baby to get stuck in. As well as including their favourite toy.

Why not take advantage of having a photographer with you and get a couple of family shots. Best done before the cakesmash unless you want to all be covered in sticky icing!
